What is the place for me in the health care system?

The T-SCORE Health Careers Unit Plan has seven lessons:

OVERALL STUDENT OBJECTIVES

  • Examine the root causes that affect health outcomes by diving in depth into three examples of health issues: food deserts, violence, and tobacco;
  • Make connections to health issues both broadly and in their local community;
  • Practice authentic data gathering and analysis skills applicable to community health advocacy, including photovoice, community health assessments, observational interviews, and assessing community stakeholders;
  • Practice advocating for better health by writing letters to community stakeholders and creating public service announcements; and
  • Choose their own public health issue and apply advocacy principles to create an advocacy project that impacts their community.

This lesson will provide students with an introduction into the kinds of careers that are available in the health care system, and the purposes of each. Students will then select several of the jobs covered in the lesson for a research project later in the unit.

Key Information:

1. The types of careers within the health care sector
2. The attributes and educational needs that accompany specific types of jobs
3. The pathways and keystone points that are involved in specific health care profession pathways

 

 

 

This lesson allows students to begin to examine their state/community and see the health security issues that are present. Students will then take this knowledge and discuss the ways in which it has multiple factors (ex. no jobs, insurance, etc.).

Key Information:

1. A closer examination of specific areas within health care (ex. clinical care)
2. What goes into ranking a county in regards to its health (primary care doctors, location, etc.)
3. What it means for an area to be “medically underserved”

 

This lesson will provide students with an introduction into the ideas around ethical medicine and how this has changed throughout the years. Students will then take this knowledge and be able to identify the ways that the modern day concept of ethical medicine compares to the original Hippocratic Oath.

Key Information:

1. The key points of the Hippocratic Oath and how it served to be the first instance of ethical medicine
2. How the term “ethical medicine” has developed over the years
3. Hot to identify ethical issues within a medical case and possible solutions to these issues

 

 

Unit Essential Question: Using graphs, what are the job disparities for minorities?

  • Why are there less minorities holding higher education jobs?
  • How do you read a graph?

 

 

 

This lesson will provide students with an insight into the different educational requirements that come with specific professions. Students will then use this information to select a profession and present the requirements to the class.

Key Information:

1. The educational requirements that are required with specific career pathways
2. The differences in attaining an associate’s degree vs. a doctorate
3. How to properly research a profession through several aspects (ex. educational attainment, median pay, job outlook, etc.)

 

This lesson will provide students with the chance to take notice of their social skills/strengths. Using this knowledge, students will be able to apply their personality characteristics to possible career choices.

Key Information:

1. How to Identify the personality traits that students exhibit strongly
2. The best kinds of careers that match up with specific personality traits
3. The key components of personality traits (time management, decision making, stress management, etc.)

This lesson serves as the summative assessment for the unit, allowing students to display all of the knowledge they have learned throughout the unit. Students will display this knowledge through a research project focusing on a health career that they would possibly pursue.

1. The best way to research a possible career and the elements to look for (pay, experience needed, job outlook)
2. How to find information about careers through various means (interviews, online articles, job postings)
3. How to curate a presentation for a specific audience
